Nikki Kurt Lives in a Yurt

A STORY ABOUT NATURE, CHORES, AND EVERYDAY MAGIC

"Nikki Kurt Lives in a Yurt" is a story about purposefully living close to nature and being inspired by the little things in life. Told in a limerick-inspired rhyming verse, it showcases a typical day living off-grid in a round canvas cabin in a magical redwood forest.

This book has so much love, gratitude, and collected wisdom drawn into every spread. The intention with this project is to inspire all ages to take care of and enjoy the natural world around them. We need this reminder now more than ever, to slow down and enjoy the simple joys in life.

WHERE OUR STORY BEGAN

During the first part of the pandemic, we lived in a yurt community outside of San Fransisco. During that time, we were deeply integrated into daily life living alongside nature and we would create funny rhymes and versus about our daily life and chores.

We had some modern amenities, an outdoor kitchen with running spring water, electric, and wifi. And yet we did not have heat or hot water or a bathroom. The bathroom was located a 5 minute walk to the main house along with an indoor kitchen.

We didn’t realize how cold it can be in the winter in the mountains living in a canvas cabin. We had to build fires for our only heat source and collect sticks in the woods and separate firewood.

THE ATTENTION TO DETAILS

Details of the Book

Designed for the demands of life, "Nikki Kurt Lives in a Yurt" is a board book consisting of 21 full color spreads printed with eco friendly inks on 300 Gsm matte C1S art paper.

The book measures 7"x7" closed and 14"w x 7"h when open. There's even a special glossary of terms in the back. We spent a lot of time to ensure the book feels just right in your hands and your littles hands. This has involved a test print of 3 paper weights just to make sure we have the right one!

Also, after reading many many books to our children in bed over the past 3 years, and in poor lighting, we realized we can do better! It was very important for Nikki to design a book that is legible to read in dim lighting with large words and enough contrast – and that would be built to last (that's why we chose a board book rather than hardcover).

Every word in this book is hand lettered by Nikki to encourage playfulness and the balance between the illustrations and the words. Nikki firmly believes that the balance between words and visuals are equally important in storytelling.
